I got back on the wagon

Let's just say the last few days haven't been pretty.  They've been DELICIOUS, but not pretty. Travel, baby showers, and a hard day at work all serve as excuses.

BUT, I was told by my sister to "blog honestly" and I figured rather than abandon this thing because JM 30DS is is gathering dust on my DVD player, I may as well own up to the fact that I went over by my calories by at least 300 every day the last few days and that I also have done ZERO exercise.

There is eggplant roasting in the over as we speak, and tomorrow I get ready to hop back into action.  I have a wedding on AUGUST 11th of this year. How cool would it be to have lost a dress size by then?  It's my choice.

Tomorrow I wake up early to shred, then hope into the grind at the STICU.  It's good to be back, baby.

Jillian Michaels on dreams:

"Your dreams are your dreams because they are your destiny, you just have to manifest them." Jillian Michaels

I counted calories

So, myfitnesspal.com tells me that in order to lose 1.5lbs every week, I need to take in a net of 1420 calories.  It's been a pretty good day for me! Here's what that looked like today.

Breakfast:
-1 smoothie with 1/2 c skim milk, 1/2 c 0% greek yogurt, 1 c frozen fruit, 1 tbsp chia seeds.

Lunch:
-1 cup of tomato soup, 1 c cucumber salad, 1/2 a turkey sandwich, & ACCIDENTAL SWEET TEA (16oz)  (honestly thought I got unsweet)

Dinner:
-1 cup pasta salad, 1/2 c grape tomatoes, 1 mozzarella  cheese stick, 1/4 avocado

Dessert: 1 weight watchers chocolate bar

That's a total of 1161 calories for the day.    That leaves me with plenty of calories for the beer I plan on drinking later tonight. :)

Also, today was day 2 of my JM 30 Day Shred.  Honestly, it was really hard to convince myself to do it again today. Deep, deep muscles hurt today.  I also managed to slip on a wet floor at work and twist my ankle, so that was a pretty good excuse to wimp out.  BUT....I did it. I really wanted to eat my dinner so I told myself to go ahead and get the work out done.

It was such a better call. Working out on NOT a full stomach and with the right clothes on made me able to focus on pushing through that burn in my muscles.  When I ate my dinner afterwards, I felt like it was fuel. It wasn't fulfilling some crazy emotional need, it was fuel for my body, pure and simple.

I haven't figured out how to accurately track the 30DS on myfitnesspal, so I put it under "vigorous calisthenics" for 20 minutes. That was calculated as 240 calories out.

That means that I could have almost 500 more calories today and still be on target!

Tomorrow I work a 12 so it will be very challenging to commit to a work out afterwards.  Send good vibes my way!

I started Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred

So, I'm currently doing a nursing preceptorship in the Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit (known at the STICU) while also working as a Nurse Aide on a cardiac telemetry floor.  I see a lot of sick people for about 40 hours a week every week, and I don't want to be one of them.  At 5'2(ish) and a fleshy size 14/16, it's not hard to envision myself dealing with high blood pressure, diabetes, or even a stroke in 20 years (or even sooner).  I don't want that to happen.

After a day of training at the hospital, an inspiring hour of therapy, and a day of poor eating, I decided it was a good time to try Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred.  If you haven't googled the before and after photos from people shredding then I highly recommend you do so. Very inspiring.

Barefoot, without a sports bra, and with a stomach full of pasta salad and steak, I started the Level 1 workout which is a 20 minute workout with 5 minute warm up and 5 minute cool down.  What I learned in my 1st Level 1 Work Out:

1. DO NOT eat a large plate of steak and pasta salad before attempting this program. I thought I was going to puke off that pounds.

2. Two minutes of cardio can feel like an eternity.

3. Wear a sports bra and maybe even sock and shoes! Duh, really Courtney?

4. I can sweat A LOT and REALLY FAST.

It felt great minus the imminent pukefest. I can't wait to try it tomorrow without a dinner on my stomach.

I'm bringing myfitnesspal.com on board to help me wrap my brain around my kcal consumption. Today I...well honestly I just tracked my kcal for fun today. Without going into the XX(and by XX I mean XXL) details, let's just say I went over my net kcal goal by over 700 kcals. Yeah, that's like two additional meals worth of calories.  I am excited to see what happens tomorrow when I make a conscious effort to stay at the 1420 kcal recommendation that the myfitnesspal.com app told me to adhere to.

Here are my pics so that we have a "before" shot or two:

I made pizza crust out of cauliflower

So for a few weeks now I've been toying around with the Paleo diet and what it has to offer. I've been startled at how amazing the recipes are and how for the first time in a VERY long time, I can tell when I'm full.

So the basic premise of paleo is 1/2 veggies and fruits 1/2 meat + nuts and oils.

No grain. No dairy.

In another post I'll go over the science behind paleo and why I think it makes sense.  Right now, let me tell you about how I ate pizza!

Instead of grain, I used cauliflower.  No cheese on this Paleo pizza. Instead I topped it with red sauce, basil, and apple-chicken sausage.

THIS is how it turned out:

Today I also did one mile on the rowing machine in 10 minutes (at level 7 resistance), and a mile of interval training on the elliptical.

I decided to "go" 25 miles

I decided to "go" 25 miles a week.  That can be accomplished by any means. Walking, running, biking, rowing.  I just need to make sure I "go" 25 miles a week.  How will this pan out?

When I work 12 hours shifts, I average 10,000 steps. That's 5 miles.
I am working 3 12s next week. That is 15 miles there.

The other 10 I can make up by walking 3 miles each day I'm not working.

With my favorite walking buddy, Shyia!

I can bicycle those miles
Don't worry, I don't always wear a helmet with a tiara on it. Or bicycle in the middle of Target.

Or even row those miles.

this is a picture of the monitor after a typical 10 minute rowing session
I row about 1 mile in 10 minutes, so if I doubled that, I could get 2 miles done each time I row.

It sounds crazy, but it's a goal.  I will GO 25 miles a week.  Somehow.

By the way, that means 100 miles a month. I like the way that sounds.
